Westchester Drill at Indian Point This Saturday May Be Visible in Rockland — No Cause for Alarm

Rockland residents may notice unusual activity across the river this Saturday, August 2, as Westchester County’s Hazardous Materials Team conducts a live training drill at the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan.

As part of the exercise, officials will safely ignite a propane flare up to 40 feet high in the plant’s lower parking lot — which may be clearly visible from parts of Rockland County. The drill will take place between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM and is being coordinated by Westchester’s Department of Emergency Services (DES), along with local fire departments and Paraco Gas.

Authorities stress that this is only a drill, and there is no cause for alarm.

The exercise is intended to enhance first responder preparedness for propane-related emergencies. It will include propane transfers, gas removal procedures, and live-fire response training.
