West Haverstraw Fire Department Mourns The Passing Of Life Member And Fire Service Veteran Anthony “Tony” Holdampf

The West Haverstraw Fire Department is mourning the loss of Anthony “Tony” Holdampf, a longtime firefighter, veteran, and life member of Volunteer Hose Company No. 2, whose decades of service left a lasting impact on both the local community and the fire service.

Holdampf proudly served in the 101st Airborne Division before beginning a distinguished 37-year career with the FDNY. He started his career at Engine 43 in the Bronx before transferring to Ladder 19 in the South Bronx during the turbulent “War Years” of the 1960s and 1970s, when fires ravaged neighborhoods throughout the city. He later became a charter member of FDNY Tactical Control Unit 712, an elite unit assigned to some of the city’s most dangerous fires. Following the crisis years, Holdampf served with 37 Truck and ultimately retired from 52 Truck in Riverdale.

Following his retirement from the FDNY, Holdampf continued his commitment to public service by joining Volunteer Hose Company No. 2 in West Haverstraw. A dedicated life member, he was honored as Rockland County Fireman of the Year in 2001 for his heroic actions.

His passion for firefighting extended to his family, inspiring his son, David Holdampf, a member of the FDNY and current Second Assistant Chief of the West Haverstraw Fire Department, as well as his son-in-law, Robert “Bobby” LaGrow, an FDNY firefighter and former Chief of the department.

Beyond his firefighting accomplishments, Holdampf was known for his generosity, craftsmanship, and willingness to help others. Fellow firefighters credited him with contributing countless hours and skills to construction and improvement projects around the firehouse. They remembered him as someone who could always be counted on in any situation.

In a statement, Volunteer Hose Company No. 2 described Holdampf as a quiet but impactful individual with a sharp sense of humor who was always ready to lend a helping hand. Members said they will deeply miss their friend and brother firefighter.
