WEATHER ALERT: Heat, Wildfire Smoke, Air Quality Alert & Risk of Strong Storms Today in Rockland County

Rockland County residents should prepare for another day of dangerous heat, poor air quality, and the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms later today. High temperatures combined with elevated humidity will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, while an Air Quality Alert remains in effect for the region.

Smoke from wildfires burning in Canada is also expected to move into Rockland County and the surrounding area on Wednesday, creating hazy skies and potentially reducing air quality through Thursday. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions such as asthma, are urged to limit prolonged outdoor activity.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, take breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas, never leave children or pets inside vehicles, and check on elderly neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Anyone with respiratory conditions should keep medications readily available and follow their healthcare provider’s recommendations. Keeping windows closed and using air conditioning with clean filters may also help reduce exposure to smoke and poor air quality.

Rockland County cooling center locations are available on the county website. Residents are encouraged to call ahead to confirm a location is open before traveling.

Forecasters are also monitoring the potential for isolated severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The primary threats include damaging wind gusts and large hail. Residents should stay weather aware, monitor trusted forecasts, and be prepared to move indoors immediately if a warning is issued.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and continue to monitor changing weather conditions throughout the day.
