Nyack officials have formally announced the launch of a new free intra-Village shuttle service called “Hoppy,” aimed at improving transportation access for residents and visitors throughout the Village.
The electric six-passenger shuttle, expected to arrive this summer, will offer free on-demand transportation between locations within Nyack, helping reduce downtown parking congestion while making it easier for residents and tourists to travel around the Village without needing a car.
According to Mayor Joseph Rand, the idea for the service was inspired by a similar GemCar shuttle system he saw operating in Santa Monica. He said the concept would work especially well in Nyack due to the Village’s hills and compact downtown layout.
The shuttle, supplied by GemCar, will operate as a low-speed electric vehicle capable of traveling up to 25 mph and is permitted on all Village roads, including Route 59. Features will include heating, air conditioning, optional doors, radio, and rear storage space for groceries and shopping bags.
Village officials say the service is designed to:
- Give residents a convenient way to travel locally without driving downtown
- Encourage visitors to park in the Marina lot and avoid searching for street parking
- Connect downtown Nyack with the Route 59 corridor, including hotels and residential developments such as Waldron Terrace
The shuttle service will be funded through a Rockland County grant and operational costs will come from hotel tax revenue and advertising, rather than local property taxes. Officials thanked Rockland County Legislators Beth Davidson and Joel Friedman, Legislature Chairman Jay Hood, and County Executive Ed Day for their support in helping secure funding for the project.
Initially, “Hoppy” is expected to operate Thursday through Sunday during afternoon and early evening hours, though officials said the schedule may evolve based on demand. Riders will likely be able to request pickups through an app, website, or text-based system, and designated pickup spots will be established throughout the Village.
The Village is also considering using the shuttle during special events, including trips to Nyack Beach State Park and seasonal events in neighboring communities such as Piermont.
Officials said the name “Hoppy” pays tribute to one of Nyack’s most famous residents while also reflecting the shuttle’s role in “hopping” around the Village. A logo and mascot are also reportedly being considered.
Village officials expect the shuttle to officially begin operating later this summer.
