Village of Nyack Adopts Climate Vulnerability & Adaptation Plan, Advancing Long-Term Resilience Efforts

The Village of Nyack has officially adopted its Climate Vulnerability & Adaptation Plan, marking a significant milestone in the village’s ongoing leadership on climate action. The newly approved plan builds on the Nyack Climate Action Plan completed in 2025 and, together, the two initiatives outline a comprehensive strategy to both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the increasing impacts of climate change.

Grounded in scientific research, community input, and local experience, the Adaptation Plan establishes a clear framework for addressing extreme heat, severe weather, sea level rise, and climate-related health risks already affecting the region. Village officials say the plan underscores a shared commitment to safeguarding public health, critical infrastructure, natural resources, and overall quality of life—particularly for the community’s most vulnerable residents—while preserving Nyack’s character as a resilient riverfront village.

With the plan now adopted, village leaders emphasized that the focus shifts to implementation. Key priorities include strengthening emergency preparedness and communications, expanding cooling and warming options for residents, investing in resilient infrastructure and green spaces, improving building efficiency, and enhancing coordination with town, county, and regional partners. Progress will be guided by annual reviews, public reporting, and the continued pursuit of funding and technical assistance to move recommendations from planning to action.

Officials stressed that the Adaptation Plan is intended to be a living document, with its success dependent on ongoing engagement from residents, businesses, institutions, and community organizations. Community participation, leaders noted, will be essential to building collective resilience and addressing climate challenges while reinforcing the connections that define Nyack.

Additional information about the plan and related efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is available through the Nyack2030 initiative.

In announcing the plan’s adoption, Nyack Mayor Joe Rand thanked Marcy Denker and the Nyack Climate Smart Committee for their leadership and contributions to the village’s climate change adaptation work.
