A Vermont man was arrested on felony weapon charges after New York State Police say troopers found a loaded handgun during a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Nyack.
State Police said troopers from SP Tarrytown stopped a 2015 Infiniti traveling northbound on I-87 at approximately 12:05 p.m. on Sunday, September 20, for vehicle and traffic violations.
During the investigation, troopers located a loaded 9mm handgun along with a 15-round magazine. The driver and owner of the firearm, identified as 24-year-old Ramiro Loachamin Jr. of Shelburne, Vermont, did not have a New York State pistol permit, according to police.
Loachamin was taken to SP Tarrytown and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for a loaded firearm, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon involving an ammunition feeding device, and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.
He was arraigned in Clarkstown Town Court and remanded to the Rockland County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, a $50,000 bond, or a $100,000 partially secured bond.
Loachamin is scheduled to appear in Orangetown Town Court on Friday, September 25.
State Police reminded travelers that firearm laws differ from state to state and that anyone entering or traveling through New York is responsible for complying with New York State firearm laws.
