UPDATE: Rockland Health Department Eases Hudson River Advisory After Sewage Leak

The Rockland County Department of Health has issued an update to its public health advisory regarding the Hudson River, announcing that the Yonkers Wastewater Recovery Facility has been fully operational since July 3 following the recent sewage discharge. State health and environmental officials, in coordination with Rockland and Westchester Counties, New York City, and other partner agencies, now advise that while residents should not drink untreated Hudson River water or swim or fully immerse themselves in the water at closed beaches, other recreational activities involving only partial contact with the water—such as boating, kayaking, and fishing—are considered safe. Those planning to fish are encouraged to follow New York State Department of Health fishing advisories.

The Rockland County Department of Health said it will continue working closely with state and local agencies to monitor the situation. “This Fourth of July holiday weekend, families will be spending time outdoors and near water,” said Dr. Mary Leahy, Rockland County Commissioner of Health. “Our goal is to protect the health and safety of Rockland residents.” Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
