New York State Police have released additional details regarding the fatal crash that occurred early Sunday morning on the New York State Thruway in Hillburn, an incident first reported by Monsey Scoop.
According to State Police, troopers from the Tarrytown Thruway Barracks responded at approximately 1:19 a.m. to a two-vehicle collision on the northbound Interstate 287 ramp leading to the Interstate 87 northbound/southbound split in the Village of Hillburn.
The preliminary investigation determined that a 2010 Honda Odyssey was attempting to transition from Interstate 287 to Interstate 87 when it came to a stop on the center shoulder, over the white fog line and partially within the travel lane. A 2015 Mini Cooper traveling in the same direction subsequently struck the rear of the Honda.
The driver of the Mini Cooper, identified as Guido R. De Castro, 64, of Hewitt, New Jersey, was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The driver of the Honda Odyssey, Orquidea D. Peña Henriguez, 40, of Hackensack, New Jersey, and a 13-year-old passenger were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation remains ongoing.
