A developing situation that began Saturday evening in Haverstraw has escalated into a dramatic multi-agency police operation spanning several Rockland County jurisdictions.
A suicidal, armed man who was reportedly holding a rifle to his head while driving on Route 9W initially triggered a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) and led officers on a high-speed chase through Haverstraw, Ramapo, Clarkstown, and other areas. The suspect posed a significant threat to himself and to law enforcement officers responding to the incident.
UPDATE as of 2:00AM: The pursuit came to a crashing end near Zukor Road and Route 304 in New City, where the suspect rammed into a Haverstraw Police vehicle, causing minor injuries to an officer. The suspect is now being held at gunpoint as the Rockland County REACT (SWAT) team negotiates with him for a peaceful surrender. A tight perimeter has been established around the scene.
UPDATE as of 5:39AM: After nearly seven hours, the standoff came to a peaceful conclusion. The suspect was taken into police custody without further incident.
