A large-scale emergency response was launched on Wednesday afternoon following a reported drowning at Haverstraw Beach. The Congers Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 4:11 p.m. and initiated a full water rescue operation, deploying Marine Unit 3 to the scene.
Mutual aid was swiftly requested, bringing in marine and dive teams from the Stony Point, Thiells, Piermont, and Nyack Fire Departments. Emergency Medical Services, Medic 3, the New York State Police, State Park Police, and Haverstraw Police also responded and assisted in the coordinated search effort.
Search operations included aerial drone surveillance and helicopter support, which were utilized to enhance visibility and expedite the search.
At approximately 6:27 p.m., the victim’s body was located and recovered from the water. The individual was transferred to the custody of the New York State Police and the Medical Examiner’s Office. Chevra Kadisha services were not needed in this tragic incident.
The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Eric A. Chugchilin of Spring Valley.
The Congers Fire Department expressed gratitude to all assisting agencies for their quick and professional response and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the victim.
