Last Saturday, a devastating three-alarm fire tore through a home at 4 Haskell Road in Airmont, displacing a local family that includes a 10th-grader and a 6th-grader from the Suffern Central School District, as reported by Monsey Scoop
The blaze was reported at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, prompting a large multi-agency response in freezing temperatures, with firefighters from West Nyack, Tallman, Suffern, Spring Valley, Sloatsburg, Hillburn, Nanuet, Monsey, Hillcrest, and Mahwah fire departments, along with Ramapo Police and Faist EMS.
Before fire units fully arrived, Ramapo Police Chief Dan Hyman, who was off duty at the time, noticed smoke coming from the home and acted heroically. He climbed a ladder with the assistance of a civilian to reach an occupant trapped in an upstairs window and helped bring them safely down. Chief Hyman was later treated for minor smoke inhalation. The rescued occupant was transported by EMS to Westchester Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation and lacerations.
In response to the family’s urgent needs following the loss of their home and belongings, the Town of Ramapo has launched a Family Assistance Initiative to support them during this incredibly difficult time. Supervisor Michael Specht and Chief Dan Hyman are encouraging the community to contribute gift cards to local department stores so the family can begin replacing essential items lost in the fire.
Those who are able and willing to help are asked to drop off donations at the Town of Ramapo Supervisor’s Office, located at 237 Route 59 in Suffern, NY, during normal business hours on Friday, January 30, 2026.
All donated items will be delivered to the Suffern High School Family Resource Center for distribution to the affected family, with thanks to Suffern High School for initiating this effort.
Supervisor Specht and Chief Hyman also extended their sincere appreciation to Town of Ramapo employees who have already committed to supporting this post-fire relief effort, noting that their generosity and compassion reflect the strength of the community.
