The Town of Ramapo is set to pay tribute to Dr. Hazel N. Dukes, a trailblazing civil rights advocate and longtime president of the NAACP New York State Conference, who passed away on March 1, 2025, at the age of 92.
Dr. Dukes, a former national president of the NAACP, was a formidable force in the fight for racial equality, education reform, and housing rights. Her lifelong dedication to justice and advocacy made a profound impact across the country, and her influence was especially felt in Rockland County, where she was a respected ally and mentor.
Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, along with members of the NAACP and the local community, will gather Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Ramapo Town Hall (237 Route 59, Suffern, NY) to celebrate Dr. Dukes’ remarkable life and contributions. The public is invited to attend this solemn and momentous occasion.
Rockland County officials, including Human Rights Commissioner Spencer Chiimbwe, have expressed deep sorrow over her passing. “Dr. Dukes’ bold fight against discrimination will continue to inspire and educate communities for generations to come,” said Chiimbwe. The Rockland County Legislature also issued a statement mourning the loss of Dr. Dukes, remembering her as a friend, colleague, and advocate who was always just a phone call away when support or advice was needed.
Throughout her decades-long career, Dr. Dukes worked tirelessly to uplift marginalized communities. Her work with the Head Start program during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration underscored her commitment to education and social welfare. Her advocacy for civil rights, housing reform, and social justice remained steadfast until the very end.
As Rockland County bids farewell to a towering figure in the fight for equality, her words continue to resonate: “If I can help somebody as I pass along; then my living shall not have been in vain.”
Dr. Hazel N. Dukes’ legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched. Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know and work alongside her.
