The Town of Ramapo’s general meeting on Wednesday night turned into a celebration of courage and commitment as officials honored 18 newly trained volunteers who joined Chaverim of Rockland’s highly specialized Search and Rescue (SAR) Team.
After completing two rigorous years of training in advanced search techniques, emergency response, and backwoods navigation, the recruits were formally inducted into the unit and presented with official SAR backpacks—each packed with essential gear designed to assist in rescuing lost or injured hikers, particularly in the treacherous terrain of Rockland County and surrounding areas.
Town Supervisor Michael Specht and Ramapo Police Chief Dany Hyman led the recognition, commending the volunteers for their readiness to put themselves on the front lines of emergency response.
“These new members are more than prepared—they are mission-ready,” said Supervisor Specht. “They are joining a team that’s already built a reputation for saving lives when every second counts.”
Founded years ago, Chaverim of Rockland’s Search and Rescue Team was created in response to the growing need for a rapid-response unit capable of assisting in wilderness emergencies and missing persons cases. What began as a small group of committed volunteers has evolved into a professional-grade operation that works hand-in-hand with local law enforcement and emergency agencies.
The SAR unit has been credited with numerous successful rescues, including locating lost children in the woods, helping stranded hikers, and responding to natural disasters. Their specialized training includes GPS-based grid searches, first aid, radio communication, thermal imaging, and night operations—skills essential to saving lives in unpredictable situations.
“No job is too big or too small for Chaverim. Their members act on deeply rooted values, making smart, compassionate decisions every day,” said Chief Dany Hyman. “I thank the Town Board, Supervisor Specht, Mona Montal, Josh Hans, Yossi Margaretten, and the entire team for supporting Chaverim, the Police, and Emergency Services. Few communities have agencies that work together with such unity and dedication.”
As the 18 new members donned their SAR backpacks and accepted their honors, it was clear they were joining more than just a team—they were stepping into a trusted community lifeline, ready to serve, search, and save.
