Following a recent rollover accident on Cragmere Road, officials from the Town of Ramapo and the Village of Airmont met Monday afternoon with a resident to address growing concerns over the safety of the narrow and problematic roadway.
Cragmere Road, which runs through portions of the Town of Ramapo, Village of Airmont, and Village of Suffern, has become known for its dangerous conditions. A retaining wall along the roadside—abruptly starting and ending—has contributed to multiple serious accidents over the years, including a fatal one.
In an effort to address the issue, Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, Chief of Staff Mona Montal, Airmont Mayor Nathan Bubel, and local residents gathered to discuss practical safety improvements.
“Cragmere Road is a unique challenge because it crosses several municipal lines. To truly make it safer, it requires everyone working together,” Supervisor Specht told Monsey Scoop. “The Town will soon begin installing a sidewalk on the sections under our control to improve pedestrian safety, and we’re actively coordinating with the villages to expand those improvements.”
Mayor Bubel confirmed that the Village of Airmont is committed to making necessary changes. “We understand the community’s concerns and are working closely with the Town of Ramapo and the Village of Suffern to develop a comprehensive plan,” Mayor Bubel told Monsey Scoop. “One of our priorities is to explore the feasibility of moving the retaining wall back to create more room on the roadway, while also improving signage and adding a crosswalk in the near future.”
Residents are urging all three municipalities to work in coordination to implement long-overdue safety upgrades, including shifting the retaining wall and adding sidewalks to protect both drivers and pedestrians.
