The Town of Clarkstown and the Congers Fire Department gathered on Saturday to dedicate Lenox Avenue in honor of George Wohl, a longtime volunteer firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty.
The street dedication ceremony recognized Wohl’s decades of service and sacrifice to the Congers community. Wohl, a lifelong resident of Congers, was a 34-year member and Life Member of the Congers Fire Department. He was tragically injured while responding to an emergency on December 13, 2003, and later passed away as a result of those injuries.
Wohl’s commitment to fire service was deeply rooted in family tradition. His father, sons, brother, and nephew all served with the Congers Fire Department, while his wife, sister-in-law, and nieces were members of the department’s Ladies Auxiliary, reflecting generations of dedication to protecting the community.
Town officials, firefighters, family members, and residents attended the ceremony, paying tribute to a man remembered for his selflessness and devotion to others. Speakers highlighted Wohl’s legacy and the lasting impact he made through his service.
With Lenox Avenue now bearing his name, town leaders said the dedication ensures that George Wohl’s memory will endure for generations. As residents and visitors travel the street in the years ahead, the sign will stand as a reminder of a firefighter who consistently put the safety and well-being of others before himself.
