Town Of Clarkstown Awarded Nearly $1.6 Million For Nanuet Transit-Oriented Development Sidewalk Improvements

The Town of Clarkstown has been awarded a $1,590,933 grant to fund new sidewalk construction and replacements within the Nanuet Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zone. The funding was secured through the Climate Smart Communities program administered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

According to town officials, the project will create continuous pedestrian connections linking the Nanuet TOD zone with surrounding neighborhoods along Church Street and Prospect Street, extending all the way to the Nanuet Public Library. Once completed, the improved sidewalk network is expected to enhance pedestrian safety and provide walkable access to residential areas, local schools, businesses, the library, and the train station—benefiting an estimated 2,500 households.

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann said the investment reflects the town’s commitment to infrastructure and community connectivity. “This nearly $1.6 million grant will connect more than 2,500 homes directly to the Nanuet TOD zone and integrate our schools and library into a safe, continuous sidewalk network,” Hoehmann said, thanking the DEC, town staff, and community supporters for their efforts.

Councilman Don Franchino called the funding “welcome news,” adding that the project will strengthen the TOD zone and create critical pedestrian links throughout Nanuet. He emphasized that Clarkstown will continue investing in infrastructure improvements to enhance quality of life across the community.
