TONIGHT: Rockland County Legislature Meeting Expected to Draw Large Turnout Over Immigration Policy Proposal

The Rockland County Legislature is expected to face a packed chamber Tuesday evening as residents turn out ahead of a vote on the proposed Safety and Dignity for All Act, a bill that has sparked sharp disagreement over public safety, immigration enforcement, and the county’s relationship with federal authorities.

Opponents of the legislation warn that, if adopted, the measure could limit cooperation between Rockland County and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, effectively moving the county toward sanctuary-style policies. Critics argue the proposal would tie the hands of law enforcement, restrict information sharing, and create public safety risks. Elected officials including Congressman Mike Lawler, Rockland County Executive Ed Day, and Senator Bill Weber have publicly opposed the bill and are urging residents to attend the meeting and speak out against it.

Supporters of the legislation, however, dispute the characterization of the bill as a “sanctuary” policy. They say the proposal would require a judicial warrant for county officials to honor ICE civil detainer requests, while explicitly preserving cooperation in criminal investigations. Backers emphasize that the legislation applies only to county employees, not municipal police departments, and argue it is intended to strengthen trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement. Supporters also note that similar legislation has been in place in neighboring Westchester County for several years.

The Legislature meeting is scheduled to begin at approximately 7:00 p.m. at the Legislature Building, 11 New Hempstead Road in New City. Due to expected high attendance, residents planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early to secure parking, seating, and the opportunity to sign up for public comment.

With competing interpretations over whether the bill enhances due process or weakens public safety, tonight’s meeting is expected to be one of the most closely watched and contentious Rockland County Legislature sessions in recent years.
