A recently resurfaced throwback photo is offering a look back at the early days of traffic enforcement in the Town of Ramapo and the origins of the Ramapo Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit (TSU).
The image, shared on Facebook by Andy Gallina and originally posted by the department many years ago, is believed to date back to around 1988. It captures Officer Larry Huxley conducting RADAR enforcement during the formative period of the TSU, which officially launched in June 1987.
At the time, the Ramapo Police Department was operating under a New York State grant aimed at increasing enforcement of seatbelt usage and speed violations, marking a significant step forward in local traffic safety initiatives.
Officer Huxley began his law enforcement career with the NYPD’s elite Highway 1 Unit before transferring to the Ramapo Police Department. During his tenure in Ramapo, he went on to serve as PBA President before eventually retiring. He was widely respected by the community, his fellow officers, and department leadership, and is remembered for leaving behind a strong legacy of service, professionalism, and teamwork.
The photo serves as a reminder of the department’s longstanding commitment to traffic safety and the officers who helped build the foundation of the programs in place today.
