THIELLS: Massive Blaze Erupts at Abandoned Letchworth Village, Firefighters Forced Into Defensive Operation

A massive fire is raging at an abandoned building in Letchworth Village on East Stewart Road, with calls first coming in at 9:12 p.m. Saturday night. Flames have fully engulfed the structure, sending thick smoke into the air and prompting a large multi-agency response.

Due to the building’s dangerous condition — including missing floors and severe structural decay — firefighters are in a defensive operation, attacking the blaze from outside. Letchworth Village, a sprawling former psychiatric facility closed since the mid-1990s, has long been vacant and is known for its hazardous interiors.

The fire remains active as of this posting, with crews working through the night to bring it under control. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area.
