In the early hours of Monday morning, at approximately 4:22 a.m., the Thiells Fire Department was dispatched by New York State Police to assist in the rescue of two individuals following a single-vehicle crash on the Palisades Parkway.
Upon arrival, emergency responders determined that the most effective access point to the crash site was from the parkway. However, due to icy conditions, the victims were unable to climb up the embankment to safety.
The initial crew on scene deployed 250 feet of a 2 1/2-inch hose as a rescue line to reach the victims. Working alongside New York State Police, Haverstraw EMS, Rockland County Medics, and additional Thiells Fire Department personnel, first responders successfully extricated both injured individuals from the 100-foot embankment.
While Hillcrest Fire Department and the Rockland County Technical Rescue Team were initially dispatched to assist, they were canceled en route as the rescue efforts progressed efficiently.
Both victims were safely removed and transported for medical evaluation.
