With heavy hearts, the Tappan Fire Department announces the passing of FDNY Captain and T.F.D. Ex-Chief Frederick “Freddie” Simms Jr., who died peacefully this morning at home, surrounded by family, after a valiant battle with 9/11-related cancer.
Freddie joined the Tappan Fire Department in March 1998 and quickly rose through the ranks, serving in multiple roles including Assistant Engineer, and ultimately as Chief of Department from 2014 to 2016. His passion for the fire service extended far beyond the local department.
On July 15, 2001, Freddie began his career with the FDNY at Ladder Company 58 in the Bronx. He was later promoted to Lieutenant at Ladder Company 40 in Harlem, before returning to 58 Truck as its Captain. In addition, he served as a New York State Fire Instructor at the Rockland County Fire Training Center, a member of the Orangetown Fire Chiefs Council, and since 2016, as Rockland County Deputy Fire Coordinator, most recently holding the title 44-3.
Freddie was more than a firefighter — he was a mentor, leader, and cherished friend. He was known for his selflessness and deep commitment to helping others, whether through his tireless organization of the Orangetown Chief’s Golf Outing to support families in need, or simply spending extra time with junior members, sharing stories and offering encouragement.
Freddie’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, both in and out of the firehouse.
Funeral arrangements will be announced as they become available. The Tappan Fire Department asks the community to keep the Simms family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
