A device initially suspected to be a hand grenade caused significant concern near 110 West Crooked Hill Road late Saturday morning, but was later confirmed to be a training device, authorities reported.
The Rockland County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad responded swiftly after the device was discovered on the side of the road, working alongside the Pearl River Fire Department and Ambulance Corps. Residents within a quarter-mile radius were advised to shelter in place as a precaution while the bomb squad assessed the situation.
After securing the object, officials determined it posed no actual threat to the community, as it was only a training device, according to the Orangetown Police.
Though there is no known danger, the incident remains under investigation by the Orangetown Police Department. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the event or has additional information to contact the Orangetown Police at 845-359-3700.
