The crash occurred at approximately 12:55 a.m. on August 10th at 51 North Liberty Drive, home to Maguilar Café, near the intersection of Ten Eyck Street. Stony Point Police say the man was traveling northbound when he lost control, struck a curb, and went airborne across a parking lot before colliding with the side of the two-story yellow building. The impact damaged the chimney and structure before the vehicle fell to the ground.
Haverstraw Ambulance, Rockland Paramedics, and Stony Point Fire Department responded to the scene. The driver was treated by EMS but was pronounced dead on site. Friends at the scene said he had been returning from a birthday party.
The building, which houses a restaurant on the first floor and apartments above, was occupied by about five sleeping residents at the time of the crash. The impact jammed the front door, forcing them to escape through a window. None were injured, but the building suffered extensive damage.
The Stony Point Detective Bureau is investigating the crash with assistance from the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations. Police say no other injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.
