Stony Point Man With Four Prior DWIs Arrested Again After Tomkins Cove Crash

A Stony Point man with a history of drunk driving arrests was taken into custody Saturday evening following a single-car crash in Tomkins Cove.

On August 30, 2025, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the Stony Point Police Department received multiple calls reporting a heavily damaged black SUV on North Liberty Drive and Elm Avenue. Officers arrived to find the vehicle on the northbound shoulder, facing southbound, after it struck a large boulder, utility pole, and roadside sign.

Standing next to the wreck was the driver, identified as Paul Hansen, 50, of Stony Point, who admitted to operating the SUV. Police observed he had difficulty standing, slurred speech, and glassy eyes. He refused to answer questions, perform field sobriety tests, or submit to a breath test.

Hansen was arrested and transported to the station, where officers determined he had four prior DWI convictions, a revoked New York State driver’s license, and was under a court order to use an interlock device.

He was charged with Aggravated DWI, DWI, Operating a Vehicle Without an Interlock Device, Refusal to Take a Breath Test, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation (1st Degree), along with several additional vehicle and traffic violations.

Following arraignment in Stony Point Justice Court, Hansen was remanded to Rockland County Jail due to his prior convictions. He is scheduled to appear in court again on September 4 at 1:30 p.m.

Police noted that the arrest occurred during enhanced Labor Day weekend patrols as part of the Rockland Stop DWI Initiative.
