STONY POINT: Driver Killed After SUV Goes Airborne, Slams Into Building Overnight

A man in his twenties was killed overnight in a violent crash in Stony Point that sent an SUV airborne into the second floor of a mixed-use building.

The incident occurred shortly before 1:00 a.m. Sunday at 52 North Liberty Drive, near the intersection of Ten Eyck Street. Police say the driver was traveling northbound on North Liberty Drive when he lost control, jumped the curb, and went airborne across a parking lot before slamming into the top floor of the two-story yellow building. The impact damaged the roof chimney before the vehicle fell to the ground.

The building houses a restaurant on the first floor and apartments above. About five residents were asleep inside at the time of the crash. The force of the impact jammed the front door, forcing occupants to escape through a window. None of them were injured.

Stony Point Fire Department, Stony Point Police, and Haverstraw EMS responded to the scene. Authorities confirm the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends of the victim told reporters he had been returning from a birthday party.

The building sustained significant structural damage, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
