State Senator Bill Weber Blasts Unsustainable Spending In State Budget Update

With just days remaining until the April 1 deadline, New York State Senator Bill Weber is raising alarms over the lack of a finalized state budget and the unsustainable spending priorities being proposed by Senate Democrats.

In a video update shared on Wednesday, Senator Weber criticized the proposed $259 billion budget, calling it fiscally irresponsible and warning of long-term consequences for New York taxpayers.

“The proposed budget is $6.9 billion higher than what the Governor suggested and a staggering $17 billion more than last year’s enacted budget,” said Weber. “To put this in perspective, New York now spends more than one-and-a-half times per person than California, and our overall budget is larger than those of Texas and Florida combined.”

Weber noted that the proposal not only raises taxes but also drains the state’s reserves, setting the stage for future budget deficits. “Spending in Albany is simply out of control,” he said.

The Senator also expressed disappointment over key public safety and energy issues left unaddressed. “This budget doesn’t fix bail and discovery reform, fails to repeal the HALT Act, and includes the disastrous HEAT Act,” he said. “Meanwhile, with New York so heavily reliant on uncertain federal funding, there’s been no effort to tighten our belts or prepare for potential shortfalls.”

Weber reaffirmed his commitment to pushing for a fiscally sound budget that prioritizes essential services. “I will keep fighting for a responsible budget—one that protects our children’s education, invests in infrastructure, and respects the taxpayers who fund it all.”

Senator Weber encouraged constituents to stay tuned for further updates as negotiations continue in Albany.
