New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. James McDonald met today with local government officials, community leaders, and healthcare providers at the Community Outreach Center in Monsey, in the Town of Ramapo, to discuss how state and local health agencies can partner with the community to promote health and improve access to care.
The meeting brought together key representatives including Rockland County Executive Ed Day, Rockland County Commissioner of Health Dr. Mary Leahy, Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht, Village of New Square Mayor Izzy Spitzer, Village of Kaser Mayor Ali Pinkasovich, and Rabbi Hirsch Horwitz of the Community Outreach Center. Also in attendance were representatives from local health centers , medical practices, and community organizations. This included Refuah Health Center, CARE 365, Hatzoloh of Rockland, Hatzoloh of New Square, Chaverim, and several local physicians.
The purpose of the meeting was to give community leaders a direct opportunity to share questions, concerns, and suggestions with the New York State Department of Health. Topics discussed included improving access to timely and accurate health information, strengthening communication and messaging between state and local agencies and community members, and making it easier for residents to connect with available health resources.
Participants highlighted the importance of clear, culturally informed communication around public health guidance, preventive care, and emerging health issues. Community leaders also raised concerns related to navigating health systems and accessing information in a way that is practical and understandable for families and service providers.
Commissioner McDonald outlined elements of his vision for how the Department of Health can continue to support good health outcomes for all New Yorkers, emphasizing that the core mission remains ensuring access to quality healthcare and promoting the health of every community. He expressed appreciation for the collaboration and initiative shown by Rockland County, the Town of Ramapo, and the villages represented at the meeting.
State and local officials acknowledged and praised the ongoing efforts of the Rockland County Department of Health and local municipalities to build stronger relationships with community-based organizations and healthcare providers. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to continued dialogue, partnership, and problem-solving to support the health and wellbeing of residents in Ramapo and across Rockland County.
