In Spring Valley, a disturbing incident was revealed early Friday morning when a woman was discovered deceased in her apartment, leading to the arrest and charging of Warle Fernandez-Arias, 37, for her murder. Fernandez-Arias is facing charges of second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, following the discovery of 36-year-old Carolyn Canela’s body by police performing a welfare check shortly before 6 a.m.
During his arraignment Friday night, Fernandez-Arias pled not guilty. Information shared during the arraignment indicated Canela was allegedly stabbed in the back with a large kitchen knife. Fernandez-Arias, who lived in the same apartment as the victim, was quickly apprehended by authorities, who suspect the killing was related to domestic issues.
The case has attracted the attention of multiple law enforcement agencies, which spent extensive time at the scene conducting investigations. As the probe continues, Spring Valley police are calling on anyone with relevant information to come forward.
A preliminary hearing for Fernandez-Arias has been scheduled for February 28.
