Spring Valley Police Release New Details in Violent Taxi Incident Arrest

Spring Valley Police have released additional information about a violent incident involving a taxi driver earlier this month, which was initially reported by Monsey Scoop on May 5.

At approximately 1:45 a.m. that morning, officers responded to a crash at 23 Ridge Avenue, where they found a visibly injured and shaken female victim. According to police, the woman had been picked up by a taxi near Evergreen Supermarket. During the ride, the driver began driving erratically and refused to allow her to exit the vehicle. The situation escalated when the vehicle crashed into a fence, and the driver allegedly attacked her with a screwdriver, attempted to rob her, and forcibly prevented her from leaving the car.

The victim was ultimately able to escape and call for help. The suspect fled in the taxi, nearly causing a head-on collision, but was soon apprehended by the Ramapo Police Department with assistance from Chaverim of Rockland.

Following a detailed investigation by the Spring Valley Detective Bureau, 22-year-old Kevin Mazariego-Figueroa of Ramapo was arrested on May 7. He is facing multiple felony charges, including Attempted Assault in the 1st Degree, Kidnapping in the 2nd Degree, Robbery in the 1st Degree, Strangulation in the 2nd Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree. He was arraigned before Judge Sweet and remanded to the Rockland County Jail.

Spring Valley Police extended their thanks to the Ramapo Police Department, Chaverim of Rockland, the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, Spring Hill Ambulance Corps, and the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office for their cooperation and assistance in the case.
