A robbery at a Spring Valley convenience store on Saturday afternoon led to a dramatic foot chase and struggle between police and an armed suspect.
On July 12th, around 4:00 PM, Spring Valley Police responded to the “Open Every Day” store at 29 South Main Street for what was initially believed to be a shoplifting incident. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the suspect had actually committed a robbery, threatening the store’s cashier with an orange box cutter-style knife.
Shortly after the incident, an officer spotted the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Edwin L. Pickering of Haverstraw, just a short distance away on North Main Street. When the officer attempted to detain him, Pickering fled on foot. After a brief pursuit, he was tackled to the ground but continued to resist arrest.
During the struggle, the officer managed to disarm Pickering, removing the orange box cutter from the immediate area to prevent further danger. Additional officers arrived shortly afterward to assist in taking Pickering into custody. The officer sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene. Pickering declined medical treatment after being evaluated by EMS.
Pickering was charged with multiple offenses including Robbery in the First Degree (B-felony), Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (D-felony), Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration, and Disorderly Conduct. He was arraigned before Judge Mellion of the Spring Valley Justice Court and remanded to the Rockland County Jail.
