The Village of Spring Valley Police Department has announced the retirement of Detective Sergeant Rony Charles after 24 years of distinguished service to the residents of Spring Valley.
A lifelong resident of the village, Charles joined the department in August 2002 and began his career in the Patrol Division. He quickly earned a reputation for his proactive policing, close ties with the community, and the arrest of hundreds of violent offenders. His work earned him numerous awards and commendations throughout his career.
Over the years, Charles served in a wide range of specialized assignments, including police instructor, Community Enhancement supervisor, bike patrol officer, Field Intelligence Unit member, fitness instructor, SWAT team member, U Visa officer, Drug Task Force officer, and Field Training officer. He also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Long Island University.
In June 2012, Rony Charles was promoted to Sergeant, where he supervised patrol officers while leading major department operations and special details. His leadership and dedication resulted in another promotion in June 2021 to Detective Sergeant. In that role, he played a key part in solving numerous crimes and leading major investigations throughout the village.
One of Charles’ most lasting contributions came in 2008, when he founded the Spring Valley Police Department’s Youth and Police Program. What began as a grassroots initiative grew into a nationally recognized model for community engagement, connecting at-risk youth and their families with local law enforcement. Through thousands of volunteer hours, nearly 2,000 young people have graduated from the program.
Charles also secured a $750,000 grant that allowed the department to establish a Juvenile Aid Bureau, significantly expanding services and support for young people in the community.
The Spring Valley Police Department thanked Detective Sergeant Rony Charles for his exceptional service, dedication, and commitment to the residents of Spring Valley, and wished him and his family continued health, happiness, and success in retirement.

Congratulations
