This week, several paramedics from Spring Hill Ambulance participated in a specialized training course on complex surgical airway management, enhancing their ability to respond to the most critical emergencies.
The advanced session was led by members of the Hackensack Meridian Health Flight Team and focused on managing life-threatening situations where patients cannot be ventilated or oxygenated using standard methods. The training emphasized emergency surgical techniques such as cricothyrotomy, which involves accessing the trachea through the neck to insert a breathing tube.
Spring Hill’s Medical Director, Dr. Robin Kim, and Dr. Jason Shatkin, a local critical care physician, were also in attendance to sharpen their own hands-on skills. Participants practiced the procedure using animal cadavers to simulate real-world conditions as closely as possible.
In addition to surgical airway techniques, paramedics were trained in the SALAD (Suction Assisted Laryngoscopy Airway Decontamination) technique — a method designed to improve intubation success rates by maintaining a clearer airway during the procedure.
Members also received a heart and lung demonstration to deepen their understanding of the life-saving treatments they administer daily. With many Spring Hill members working in allied health fields or currently enrolled in medical programs, the session provided valuable experiential learning.
Spring Hill EMS remains dedicated to ongoing training and education to ensure its team is always equipped to provide the highest standard of emergency medical care.
Always here. Always ready.
