The Hugh Gassner Fire Company and the South Spring Valley Fire District are mourning the loss of former Chief and longtime member John Schaber, who passed away after nearly three decades of service to the community.
Schaber, who joined the department in 1996 at the age of 17, was inspired to follow in the footsteps of his stepfather, Lloyd “Bill” Jablin, his brother Chris, and his mother Patricia. Despite the tragic loss of Jablin in the line of duty in 1998, Schaber’s commitment to the fire service remained steadfast. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, serving as Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, and ultimately Chief from 2012 to 2014.
Known for his steady leadership and his ability to bring calm in the face of danger, Schaber was also celebrated for his quick wit and trademark laugh. His fellow firefighters recalled his humor as much a part of the firehouse as the sirens themselves.
In addition to his local service, Schaber was an active member of the Ramapo Chiefs, Rockland County Chiefs, and the Rockland County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. Beyond firefighting, he was passionate about bagpipes, devoted to his cats, and deeply cherished his niece Sarah, who friends say was the center of his world.
“John was the kind of firefighter and friend you wanted by your side,” the department said in a statement. “His legacy of courage, compassion, and humor will continue to inspire us all.”
Schaber’s loss leaves a deep void in the Rockland County fire service community, but his memory will remain a source of strength and pride for those who served alongside him.
