John “Jay” Savage has resigned from his position as a trustee on the South Orangetown Central School District Board after facing intense criticism for comments he made on social media regarding the recent assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Savage, who was elected to the board earlier this year, came under fire after the post circulated widely and sparked outrage within the community. At a tense public meeting this week, more than 30 residents and parents addressed the board, with the majority demanding his resignation or removal.
In response to the growing calls for accountability, the school board had been exploring options to remove Savage if he refused to step down. Ultimately, Savage chose to resign before a formal action was taken.
Many families argued that his remarks were highly inappropriate for an elected school official, saying that board members must set an example of respect and civility. While a small number defended his right to free speech, the overwhelming sentiment at the meeting was that he could no longer serve effectively.
With his resignation, the board will now need to determine how to fill the vacant seat while also reviewing guidelines to address social media conduct by elected representatives moving forward.
