A seemingly routine shopping trip turned into a nightmare on Monday in Airmont, when a woman became the victim of a sophisticated robbery scheme at the busy Route 59 shopping plaza housing Walmart and The Hive Kosher Market.
Sources tell Monsey Scoop that the woman had withdrawn approximately $2,000 in cash before shopping. When she returned to her vehicle, she reversed and suddenly heard a loud pop—the result of a sabotaged tire. As she stepped out, two masked men approached, pretending to offer help. The woman declined, noting that her husband and Chaverim of Rockland volunteers were already on the way.
Moments later, Chaverim arrived and noticed that an object seemed to have been placed under the tire, apparently causing the puncture. Volunteers quickly repaired the damage, and the woman re-entered her vehicle—only to discover that her entire pocketbook had vanished.
Sources tell Monsey Scoop that two or more suspects coordinated the theft, with one distracting the victim while the other snatched the bag and fled. Ramapo Police and Chaverim of Rockland are actively investigating the incident.
Shockingly, this mirrors a strikingly similar case in Brooklyn earlier this summer, where two men used the exact same scheme before being apprehended by Boro Park Shomrim and the NYPD.
