On Yom Kippur night, around 10 p.m., an automatic fire alarm was triggered at 73 Main Street, the location of Beis Medrish Elyon. Although automatic alarms are often dismissed as false alerts, this incident was different, as alarms were triggered from multiple zones, usually a sign of a smoke condition. The Monsey Fire Department responded swiftly, suspecting a possible structure fire, which indeed the dispatcher upgraded it to a structure fire while enroute.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a large tray of neshomah candles in flames, causing significant smoke to fill a large portion of the building. The situation was especially dangerous due to the large number of Mispallelim present for Yom Kippur, including children, seniors, and individuals with mobility aids such as walkers and wheelchairs. This made a quick and efficient response critical to prevent harm. The fire department employed multiple extinguishing methods, including dry powder and water, successfully containing the fire before it could escalate into a full-blown structure fire. This incident underscores the importance of taking automatic alarms seriously, as they can signal real and dangerous fires.
In a separate incident the following day, a major pipe burst at a multi-family residence on Jill Lane. While this might seem like a routine property damage issue, the situation posed a significant risk. Water from the burst pipe could have come into contact with live electrical systems, particularly dangerous on Yom Tov when many stoves, lights, and electrical appliances are in use. A vigilant resident flagged down a patrol car, which promptly notified the Monsey Fire Department Communications. Firefighters quickly responded, addressing the immediate danger, while Shabbos patrol volunteers from Chaverim of Rockland stepped in to help make the home livable for the residents during Yom Kippur.
Both incidents serve as a reminder to the community that what may seem like nothing—just a simple automatic alarm— or a busted pipe can quickly escalate into a serious situation, highlighting the Monsey Fire Department’s vigilance and readiness in protecting the community during emergencies.
