Senator Bill Weber Warns Against Mid-Cycle Redistricting Efforts in New York

New York State Senator Bill Weber is speaking out amid renewed discussions in Albany surrounding possible court-ordered changes to New York’s congressional district maps — a move that could impact multiple Republican-held seats across the state.

The issue stems from ongoing legal challenges related to New York’s congressional maps, which were last redrawn following the 2020 Census. While the state’s maps were revised prior to the 2022 elections, recent court activity involving New York’s 11th Congressional District — currently represented by Nicole Malliotakis — has sparked broader conversations among some Democratic lawmakers about revisiting congressional lines again, even though the decade-long redistricting cycle is already underway.

According to Weber, some Albany Democrats are now openly discussing the possibility of using the courts to trigger mid-cycle redistricting, potentially targeting additional districts — including New York’s 17th Congressional District, represented by Mike Lawler — in an effort to reshape the political landscape ahead of future elections.

Weber warned that such a move would represent a significant departure from the voter-approved redistricting process established in New York, which created the Independent Redistricting Commission to prevent partisan manipulation of district boundaries. Under that system, congressional maps are intended to be redrawn only once every ten years, following the census.

“Voters were promised a fair, independent redistricting process,” Weber said, cautioning against efforts to bypass the commission and redraw maps through litigation or legislative action. He argued that allowing mid-cycle changes whenever one party is dissatisfied with election results would set a dangerous precedent.

“Some will point to other states and say, ‘They’re doing it, so we should too.’ That is not who we are,” Weber said. “New York should be better than that. We must uphold our standards and process, not sacrifice them for short-term partisan gain. Fair maps and a consistent process protect every New Yorker’s voice.”

Weber concluded by urging elected officials from both parties to oppose any attempt to redraw congressional district lines outside the established, voter-approved framework, warning that undermining the process risks eroding public trust in New York’s elections.

  1. Isn’t that what Trump and the republicans just did in Taxes and other states? So why cry Bill??? Enjoy the front row seat.
The only reason Mike won was because of the re-district. Time up.
Enough with your GOP agenda. We need politicians who can actually deliver for the community.
