New York State Senator Bill Weber recently presented three villages in Rockland County with grant funding aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety through new sidewalk infrastructure. The villages of New Hempstead, Airmont, and Chestnut Ridge, all in the Town of Ramapo, are set to benefit from these grants, which will be used to install and improve sidewalks, a long-awaited upgrade for residents.
Sources close to the situation informed Monsey Scoop that these grants were initially nominated by Former State Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick during his term from January 2021 to December 2023. Although Reichlin-Melnick had intended for the grant allocations to reach the villages, his departure from office following an electoral loss meant the funds were put on hold. Senator Weber took action to reaffirm the grants through his recent funding allocation from the state Senate, ensuring the funds would now be directed to the villages.
“Residents come from all walks of life, but one thing we have in common is recognizing the importance of public safety,” Senator Weber said. “I am pleased to be able to award funding to three villages to upgrade their roadsides to allow for greater pedestrian safety.”
Village officials expressed their gratitude for Senator Weber’s support and dedication to local infrastructure projects. “On behalf of the residents of Chestnut Ridge,” said Trustee Shmuli Fromovitz, “I would like to thank Senator Bill Weber for prioritizing infrastructure and sidewalk projects to address critical safety concerns in our village.”
Shaya Schiffman, Trustee of New Hempstead, also emphasized the positive impact of the funding. “Senator Weber has made it a priority to prioritize our village’s safety,” he remarked. “This grant will continue to keep our community safe. I want to thank the Senator for the much-needed and appreciated funding.”
Mayor Nathan Bubel of Airmont added, “Thanks to Senator Weber, the Village of Airmont will have a safe place for pedestrians to walk. We are grateful that, thanks to the Senator, village residents will be safer when they are out and about.”
Local residents, too, welcomed the news. “We’ve been waiting for decades for sidewalks in our community,” shared Mindy Levi, a Chestnut Ridge resident who voiced her gratitude for the renewed commitment to pedestrian safety.
The sidewalk projects in New Hempstead, Airmont, and Chestnut Ridge are expected to begin soon, marking a new chapter in safety and accessibility for these communities.
