Senator Bill Weber honored Dr. Mary Leahy in a ceremony held in Albany on Tuesday evening, naming her the 2024 Woman of Distinction. Dr. Leahy, a board-certified internist with over 30 years of medical practice, has distinguished herself as a dedicated physician, collaborative leader, and committed community volunteer.
Dr. Leahy’s impressive career began with a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Boston College, followed by an internal medicine residency at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, where she served as chief medical resident from 1985 to 1986. She founded and operated a successful solo practice before co-founding Rockland Pulmonary & Medical Associates. Her leadership skills were further showcased when she became the senior vice president of physician operations for Bon Secours Medical Group, overseeing its expansion from over 60 practitioners to more than 120.
In 2013, Dr. Leahy was appointed CEO of Bon Secours Charity Health System. In this role, she set the strategic vision and provided leadership for system-wide operations, including three acute care hospitals, the Bon Secours Medical Group, a regional home health care agency, two long-term care facilities, an assisted living facility, and an adult home. Her strategic acumen was instrumental in the 2014-2015 joint venture between Bon Secours Health System and Westchester Medical Center (WMC).
Dr. Leahy’s contributions to the healthcare industry have been widely recognized. She has served on the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board and was honored with the Hudson Valley Magazine Sixth Annual Women in Business Award in 2017. She also received the RBA Pinnacle Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in Business.
Married for 39 years with two children, Dr. Leahy embodies the best of Rockland County and is a true Woman of Distinction.
