After hearing of the heartbreaking story of Baby X, whose mother tragically passed away three months after giving birth, New York State Senator Bill Weber made the baby’s case his top priority and that of his office. The infant left without a mother and without essential documents, was at risk of losing critical services, including health insurance, due to a missing birth certificate.
The story of Baby X began at a local birthing center where the infant was born healthy, but complications soon arose for the mother. After being transferred to Nyack Hospital by Hatzoloh emergency services, the mother was placed on a respirator and tragically passed away three months later.
During that time, a missing birth certificate posed significant challenges, which were only exasperated as time went on. Without a birth certificate, Baby X was not eligible for health insurance or any formal identification. Despite the birthing center filing the required paperwork, it was never processed correctly, and repeated attempts by attorneys from the birthing center to resolve the issue with the Department of Vital Records in Albany were unsuccessful.
The baby’s family, overwhelmed by grief and frustration, had nowhere to turn despite the infant being without essential coverage. In August, a family friend advised the family to contact Senator Weber’s office, hoping that the Senator could help cut through the red tape. Senator Weber immediately made Baby X’s case a priority. “Stop everything and focus on this,” he instructed his team.
In an effort led by Michael Rydelek, Director of Constituent Services for Senator Weber, began pursuit of the Department of Vital Records as well as the Department of Health and persisted in advocating for the child’s right to essential services and documentation.
Two months later, despite constant stonewalling from the Department of Vital Records and thanks to the Senator’s firm advocacy, the family finally obtained Baby X’s birth certificate, signed and delivered on October 7.
“What attorneys couldn’t deliver after more than a year and a half, Senator Weber delivered within a few weeks,” the family friend said, expressing deep gratitude to both the Senator and Michael Rydelek for their efforts on behalf of Baby X.
