Senator Bill Weber today announced that seven public libraries across the 38th Senate District have been awarded a combined $1,630,491 in State Aid for Library Construction funding as part of the New York State Library’s Public Library Construction Aid Program.
“These funds will help ensure our libraries remain safe, accessible, and welcoming community hubs,” said Senator Weber. “Libraries are more than places to borrow books — they are centers for learning, workforce development, and community engagement, and I am proud to help secure this funding for Rockland County.”
The following libraries in the 38th Senate District received funding for 2025 projects:
These funds are part of $44 million in capital funding for public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects provided in the FY2024–2025 State Budget. Staff of the New York State Library provide critical technical support and review of every application prior to submission to the Dormitory Authority of New York (DASNY), ensuring projects are eligible and competitive for funding.
New York’s public libraries are in urgent need of renovation and upgrading. A recent survey documented more than $1.75 billion in unmet library construction and renovation needs statewide. More than one-third of New York’s public library buildings are over 100 years old, and more than three-quarters are at least 40 years old. Many libraries face challenges related to accessibility, energy efficiency, outdated electrical systems, and insufficient space to meet modern community needs.
Eligible projects under the State Aid for Library Construction Program include new construction, building additions, renovations, accessibility improvements, energy-efficient upgrades, standby generators, broadband infrastructure, and technology enhancements. Projects that improve accessibility for patrons with disabilities are a high priority.
In the FY2025–2026 State Budget, the Legislature again provided $44 million for library construction projects, which will be announced in Summer 2026 — underscoring the continued commitment to strengthening libraries across New York State.
