A routine Monday morning pickup turned into a lifesaving moment when a Chaverim of Rockland volunteer prevented an elderly woman from losing thousands of dollars to a sophisticated phone scam at the Home Depot in Nanuet.
The volunteer, known for always being alert and tuned in to his surroundings, overheard the woman on the phone sounding terrified and saying, “After I give you the gift cards, you’ll leave me alone, right?”
Realizing instantly that something was very wrong, he sprang into action. He alerted customer service and instructed them not to sell any gift cards to the woman, then immediately contacted the Clarkstown Police Department.
Officers arrived within minutes and confirmed the worst: the woman had been manipulated by scammers demanding large sums of money through gift cards, a common tactic used to prey on the vulnerable. Police helped her end the call before she suffered a devastating financial loss.
Thanks to this Chaverim volunteer’s quick instincts, calm response, and refusal to ignore what he heard, a frightened elderly woman walked out safe, protected, and with every dollar still in her pocket.
Another powerful reminder that Chaverim volunteers save the day in more ways than one, even when the call for help is never made.

Wow wow he should be honored
Yup and we must make awareness
