Rockland Paramedic Services Deploys Lifesaving Cyanide Antidote in Paramedic Response Vehicles

Rockland County residents and firefighters now have access to faster treatment for suspected cyanide poisoning thanks to a major investment by Rockland Paramedic Services (RPS). The agency has added CYANOKIT®, a lifesaving antidote used to treat cyanide poisoning, to its advanced life support fleet, allowing paramedics to begin treatment at the scene of a fire before patients arrive at the hospital.

Modern homes contain large amounts of synthetic materials that can release deadly hydrogen cyanide gas when they burn, creating a serious and often overlooked hazard for both occupants and firefighters. Early treatment is critical, and the addition of CYANOKIT enables RPS crews to provide potentially lifesaving care during the crucial first moments of an emergency.

Rockland Paramedic Services has deployed 14 CYANOKITs throughout its fleet, representing a significant investment in expanding advanced emergency medical capabilities across Rockland County. The agency says the new equipment will help ensure this specialized treatment is readily available whenever it is needed.

RPS Executive Director Tim Egan said the initiative reflects the agency’s ongoing commitment to bringing the latest lifesaving technologies to Rockland County and improving outcomes for patients facing life-threatening emergencies.
