Rockland Jewish Federation Hosts Community Memorial to Remember the Horrific Events of October 7

On Monday night, October 7, over 1,500 community members came together at Clover Stadium in Pomona to commemorate the tragic events that occurred exactly one year earlier. Almost every seat in the stadium facing the stage was filled, as participants joined in prayer, candle lighting, flag waving, and song in a powerful display of unity and remembrance.

The memorial, hosted by the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County, drew a diverse crowd of students, religious leaders, and local residents, all united in their call for peace and the release of over 100 hostages. The event was marked by emotional speeches, heartfelt pleas for an end to the ongoing conflict, and a deep sense of community solidarity.

Several prominent politicians and Jewish leaders spoke at the event, including Ari Rosenblum, CEO of the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County; David Kirschtel, CEO of JCC Rockland; Rabbi Ariel Russo of Congregation Sons of Israel in Nyack; Rabbi Ari Abramowitz, Executive Director of Nevut Lone Soldier Veterans; Avrumy Jordan of United Hatzolah; Congressman Mike Lawler; and Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht, among others. Each speaker expressed their profound concern for the situation in Israel and emphasized the importance of communal support during this difficult time.

Dovid Efune, publisher of The New York Sun and former editor-in-chief of The Algemeiner, delivered the keynote address. A passionate advocate for Israel and the Jewish people, Efune inspired the audience with his words, reminding everyone of the importance of unity and resilience in the face of tragedy.

The event, open to attendees aged 12 and up, emphasized safety and security, with the Town of Ramapo’s security team ensuring the well-being of all present. No large bags or backpacks were permitted, and supportive flags and signs were allowed as long as they were not mounted on poles or sticks.

As the community marked this somber anniversary, the event served as both a memorial for the lives lost and a rallying cry for hope, peace, and the safe return of the hostages.
