Rockland Jewish Alliance Launches Petition to Refund East Ramapo Taxpayers, Citing $100 Million Surplus

The Rockland Jewish Alliance has initiated a petition demanding that East Ramapo taxpayers receive refunds after what they call an “unfair and unnecessary” tax increase imposed by the state.

In 2023, state officials mandated a 4.38% tax hike on East Ramapo residents, citing financial distress in the school district. However, recent revelations show the district now has a $100 million surplus, raising questions about the justification for the increase.

Community members and advocacy groups argue that the tax hike was an unjustified burden and are calling for a full refund. “This was an illegal tax grab by unelected bureaucrats,” the petition states, urging taxpayers to take action.

The petition, which has gained significant traction, demands both financial accountability and the return of funds to local residents. Supporters say the initiative is about fairness and justice for taxpayers who were forced to shoulder an excessive tax burden.
