Rockland DA’s Legislative Breakfast Spotlights Crime Trends and Pays Tribute to 9/11 Hero Welles Crowther {PHOTOS}

On Friday morning, the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office (RCDAO) hosted its annual legislative breakfast at Rockland Community College. Over 100 elected officials, staff members, and community leaders from across the county attended the event, which featured presentations on pressing issues, crime trends, and community initiatives.

The event provided a platform for RCDAO staff to discuss significant local cases, updates on crime prevention efforts, and advancements in investigations into Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC). Attendees were also treated to a live demonstration by the office’s electronics detection K9, “Remy.”

A highlight of the morning was the special appearance of Alison Crowther, mother of 9/11 hero Welles Remy Crowther, whose story of selflessness and bravery continues to inspire. A graduate of Nyack High School and Boston College, Welles was just 24 years old when he gave his life rescuing others during the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Known as “The Man in the Red Bandana,” he saved as many as 18 lives on that fateful day.

In a poignant tribute to Welles’ legacy, District Attorney Tom Walsh presented Mrs. Crowther with a shadow box containing Remy’s badge, honoring the connection between her son’s courage and the work of RCDAO’s K9 unit. The dog, named “Remy” in Welles’ memory, is one of only 100 electronics detection K9s in the United States. Guests were also given red bandanas as a symbol of Welles’ heroic spirit and encouraged to share his story of courage and service.

The breakfast was made possible through partnerships with Rockland Community College, the Town of Ramapo Police Department Honor Guard, and the Albertus Magnus High School Choir, who added a touch of inspiration with their musical performance.

District Attorney Tom Walsh expressed gratitude to all attendees and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling crime and fostering community resilience. The event not only served to inform but also underscored the enduring impact of individuals who dedicate themselves to serving others, both in life and in legacy.
