Rockland DA Detective Earns Prestigious Forensic Computer Examiner Certification in Record Time

Detective Barbara Willen of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Investigative Unit has achieved a major professional milestone, earning the Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE) certification from the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists (IACIS). Remarkably, she completed the rigorous program in just three months—half the time typically allotted to candidates.

The intensive certification tests core digital forensic concepts, with a focus on Microsoft Windows-based systems. Candidates must demonstrate both theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise in examining, analyzing, and retrieving data from computer systems.

Chief of Detectives Deirdre Smith praised Willen’s accomplishment, calling it a significant asset to the DA’s office. “Detective Willen’s achievement represents the highest standard in the field of computer forensics,” Smith said. “Her accelerated completion of this program reflects her dedication to professional excellence and strengthens our ability to investigate and prosecute crimes in the digital age.”

Before advancing to the certification stage, candidates must complete the demanding two-week Basic Computer Forensic Examiner Course. Willen successfully completed the prerequisite in May and immediately began the CFCE program in June. Designed to last through November, the program includes four peer-reviewed sections, a practical exam, and a comprehensive final exam of more than 100 questions. With the guidance of an IACIS coach, candidates typically spend months on each stage. Willen, however, completed the process by August 20, 2025.

Reflecting on the achievement, Willen credited her mentors and colleagues. “I’m grateful for this opportunity that the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office afforded me and for the mentors who believed in me over the years,” she said.

One such mentor, Andrew Stack, a retired New York State Police officer and current criminal investigator with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, commended her skills. “Detective Willen brings not only technical skill, but also a collaborative spirit and a sharp analytical mind,” Stack noted. “She is, without question, an asset to her team and to the broader forensic community.”

Willen’s certification reinforces the Rockland County DA’s Office as a leader in modern investigative practices. Looking ahead, she hopes to mentor others just as she was guided. “I’m looking to increase my expertise,” Willen said. “And I hope to pay it forward like others did for me.”
