Rockland County Warns of Strong to Severe Storms Tuesday

Rockland County Emergency Management is urging residents to prepare for a round of strong to severe thunderstorms expected to move through the area Tuesday, bringing the potential for flash flooding, damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and large hail.

Forecasters are calling for 1 to 2 inches of rain across much of the county, with isolated areas possibly receiving 3 to 4 inches. Rainfall rates could reach 2 to 2.5 inches per hour, creating a risk of localized flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, low-lying locations, and places with poor drainage. Officials remind motorists to never drive through flooded roadways.

The strongest storms may produce wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, capable of bringing down trees and power lines and causing scattered power outages. While the tornado threat remains low, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, and hail up to 1 inch in diameter is also possible.

Emergency Management encourages residents to closely monitor weather updates, have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts, secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices in advance of the storms, and move indoors immediately if thunder is heard.

Rockland County Emergency Management said it will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
