Rockland County Under Extreme Heat Warning and Air Quality Alert Through Holiday Weekend

Rockland County officials are urging residents to take precautions as dangerous heat and poor air quality are expected to impact the region over the next several days. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from Wednesday evening, July 1, through Saturday evening, July 4, with heat index values forecast to reach as high as 112 degrees. Overnight temperatures will remain unusually warm, offering little relief from the prolonged heat.

An Air Quality Alert also remains in effect through 11:00 p.m. today due to elevated ground-level ozone, which may reach unhealthy levels, particularly for children, older adults, and individuals with heart or lung conditions. Residents in these groups are encouraged to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity.

Rockland County Emergency Management is advising residents to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and schedule outdoor work or exercise during the early morning or evening hours. Officials are also asking residents to check on elderly neighbors, young children, and anyone without access to air conditioning.

Emergency officials remind the public that heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency. Anyone showing signs such as confusion, loss of consciousness, or a dangerously high body temperature should receive immediate medical attention by calling 911. Residents are also warned that homes without air conditioning can remain dangerously hot for several days, even after outdoor temperatures begin to cool, making it important to continue seeking cool environments and staying hydrated throughout the heat event.
