Rockland County is under a storm watch as heavy rain and strong-to-severe thunderstorms are expected to pass through the area tonight, with conditions anticipated to worsen between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. The storms could bring localized flooding, high winds, and a risk of tornadoes.
In response to the forecasted severe weather, Orange & Rockland (O&R) is preparing to mobilize its emergency response workforce. O&R warns that these thunderstorms could threaten electric service due to high winds, lightning, and downed trees or limbs, all of which may disrupt the reliable delivery of power.
To ensure a swift response, O&R has activated company crews, contractor overhead line teams, tree removal experts, customer service operators, and other members of the emergency response team. Additionally, 50 mutual aid crew members will be brought in to assist with emergency operations if needed.
Key Hazards to Watch For:
-
Heavy Rain: Rainfall rates up to 1 inch per hour may cause localized flooding.
-
Severe Thunderstorms: Strong winds of 58+ mph, hail, and isolated tornadoes are possible.
-
Gusty Winds: Winds could reach up to 35 mph outside of storms.
-
High Temperatures: Feels-like temperatures in the low-to-mid 90s this afternoon.
O&R encourages residents to stay informed and prepared. For the latest updates on power outages, view the O&R Outage Map. A brief instructional video is also available to guide users on how to navigate the map.
Stay safe and take necessary precautions as the storm system moves through the region.
